盆栽 Bonsai in the Gardens Show: July 31-August 1, 2021

Celebrate the Japanese art of bonsai (tree in a pot or ‘tray planting’). Explore a gallery of different bonsai styles, trained tree miniature versions of the natural form. Learn from internationally-recognized bonsai artists Pauline Muth, Frank Mihalic, and Mark FieldsEnjoy perusing bonsai displays and vendor exhibits, live demonstrations, and bonsai critiques by the experts.  Shop for bonsai-related wares at vendor tables. Register for and experience a Beginning Bonsai 101 Workshop taught by Pauline Muth or Frank Mihalic’s Seven Trident Maple Forest Style Workshop and come away with your very own bonsai!

Admission to the Bonsai show (not including admission to Wellfield):
$5 for adults 13 and over, $3 for Wellfield members

Meet our featured artists, workshop instructors and judges:

Pauline Muth has been studying, learning, and practicing bonsai for over 40 years and has traveled across the country and internationally teaching bonsai. She began her journey in bonsai studying botany in college and now maintains a collection of hardy and non-hardy trees set in a large garden space. Pauline has extensive experience across several bonsai organizations, serving in numerous leadership capacities, conference facilitation, and associated activities.

Frank Mihalic Frank Mihalic founded Ichiban Publishing, a company dedicated to publishing bonsai related materials, in 1979. He has written and published numerous books and instructional media about bonsai over the past 40 years. His trees have been voted into the top one hundred Bonsai trees in the world many times, and in 2006, one of his trees was first runner-up in the world. In 2000, Frank was awarded a Special Membership in the Cheju Bonsai Growers Association in Cheju, Korea. In 2001, Frank founded the First Bonsai Magazine on the Internet: www.bonsaionlinemagazine.com. Frank has served on the boards of the American Bonsai Society and Bonsai Clubs International Board of Directors, and currently serves as Bonsai Clubs International’s President. Frank and his family have owned and operated Wildwood Gardens for over 70 years: http://www.wildwoodgardens.com/

Mark Fields began his lifelong passion for the art of bonsai in 1968 at the age of 9, and has learned from more than 60 bonsai artists from all over the globe. He is a past 2 term president of the Indianapolis Bonsai Club and is currently the president of the American Bonsai Society.

*”Beginning Bonsai 101″ Workshop (Requires Advanced Registration)

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at bonsai? Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from an expert in an intimate setting, where you’ll walk away with your very own bonsai after the two-hour introductory workshop. Internationally-known bonsai artist Pauline Muth leads our “Beginning Bonsai 101” workshop at 11 a.m. All participants will be given hands-on instruction for selection, planting, shaping and styling, as well as care and maintenance of their very own bonsai. This introduction to bonsai also includes a brief history of this amazing art form, a primer on tree selection and cultivation, and resources that will have your enjoying your bonsai experience for years to come. All materials are included, workshop is limited to just 10 participants to ensure a quality, hands-on experience for all. You will walk away with your own starter bonsai tree in a pot! Workshops are intended for those ages 18 and older.

Are you experienced at Bonsai and and want to up your game and create a forest? Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from Frank Mihalic in an intimate setting in which you’ll walk away with your very own Seven Trident Maple Forest style bonsai after the two-hour workshop in which all participants will be given hands-on instruction for selection, planting, shaping and styling, as well as care and maintenance of their very own bonsai. All materials are included, workshop is limited to just 8 participants to ensure a quality, hands-on experience for all. Workshops are intended for those ages 18 and older.
