Working with the volunteers at Wellfield is one of the things I enjoy most about my job; our volunteers seem happy to be here and almost always have smiles on their faces. Why are they happy? Probably because they are doing something they enjoy, and something that is good for them. It’s true: volunteering is actually good for your health. It’s proven that volunteering can actually help reduce stress, and it gives a sense of belonging and accomplishment. Often times, life-long friendships can be formed.
Volunteering improves the quality of your community, making it a better place to live. When you decide to volunteer, you are likely to choose an organization that has meaning to you. You meet others that have the same interest and things in common. It’s a great way to make connections in your community and foster a sense of belonging. Many of our volunteers start off not knowing anyone, and then before long they have cultivated great friendships.
Volunteering offers a chance to be both mentally and physically active. Keeping yourself moving improves your physical health, and learning new skills is a great way to keep your mind sharp. Volunteering can offer you the opportunity for both activities. Wellfield offers volunteer opportunities for all levels of activity, both mentally and physically. If digging in the dirt is your thing, there is always room for you! Don’t like digging in the dirt? We can always use help with our events or in our Visitors Cottage.
Even if Wellfield isn’t the place you choose to volunteer, look around your community and get involved. Your health can improve, and your community definitely will.
